Starring Jacques Perrin, and Lancelot Perrin

Disneynature, the studio that presented the record-breaking film Earth, brings Oceans to the big screen on Earth Day, 2010. Nearly three-quarters of the Earth's surface is covered by water and Oceans boldly chronicles the mysteries that lie beneath. Directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud dive deep into the very waters that sustain all of mankind—exploring the playful splendor and the harsh reality of the weird and wonderful creatures that live within. Featuring spectacular never-before-seen imagery captured by the latest underwater technologies, Oceans offers an unprecedented look beneath the sea in a powerful yet enchanting motion picture. Boxoffice Magazine Pete Hammond

Narrated by Pierce Brosnan, Oceans is simply amazing at times, a truly remarkable and extraordinary journey under the sea that takes us places we have never been before.

There have, over the years, been a lot of terrific undersea documentaries, but if you want to know what distinguishes this new one, it comes down to a single word: technology.

What "Winged Migration" did for birds, Oceans does for all sorts of strange sea creatures in an ambitious, impressively filmed documentary.

Though there's a formlessness to it all, the wow factor will thrill the "Earth" crowd, making Oceans a surefire bet for families and nature lovers.

Océans is a jaw-dropper as a visual travelogue--even its anthropomorphic indulgences (an ocean floor is turned into a rough neighborhood, complete with trespassers and shy weirdos) are winning.

An evolutionary leap forward, a visually exquisite film that doesn't ignore the truths of pollution and predatory survival.

The movie could -- should -- be a symphony, and it frequently makes excellent use of spare classical music. When Brosnan pipes up, he is as welcome as a car alarm.

Once Oceans' exhilarating visuals get going, it's easy to ignore the words. This really is a film that manages to show us things we've never seen and make what we have already seen look different and new.

The filmmakers work tirelessly to parallel their undersea world with the larger universe, offering genteel reminders of our mutual dependence.

Perfect for families and exquisitely shot, this entry from the Disneynature division is even better and fresher than last year's "Earth."

The music is symphonic, the cinematography spectacular, the narration — ay, there's the rub. In Oceans, the latest Disney nature documentary, the voice-over almost manages to turn the majestic into the mundane. Almost.

Bruno Coulais' musical score provides an evocative counterpoint to the often dazzling photography. A scene featuring diving sea birds and whales moving in concert with the rhythm of the waves is stunning.

Perrin and Cluzaud mainly emphasize the sea's beauty and power as its best argument, finding exquisite choreography between those florid stretches of narration.

Unlike in “Winged Migration,’’ the majestic imagery fails to tell a story or advance a message.

Time Out New York Andrew Schenker

The film’s rigorous commitment to probing the undersea kingdom’s oddities separates it from the usual tepid Discovery Channel fare, and those looking for marine exotica and savagery will thrill to a sea slug that shimmies like a flamenco dancer and an orgiastic feeding frenzy involving dolphins, sharks and a school of sardines.

It comes to American theaters saddled with narration by Pierce Brosnan, who purrs through the gratingly vague script like the world’s plummiest old half-drunken uncle.

Chad S. gave it a6:
Is the marine iguana of the Galapagos Islands edible? Just curious. When a reflected rocket ascends in the eyes of this exothermic animal during its close-up(like an outtake from David Fricke's "Baraka"), the sea lizard brought me back to the Bert Parks-serenaded komodo dragon of Andrew Bergman's "The Freshman", in which Clark Kellogg(Matthew Broderick) thought that the Gourmet Club(a secret organization of rich people who pay to dine on the last specimen of a soon-to-be instinct animal) was preparing themselves to eat. Too surreal to be true, the whole set-up did turn out to be a hoax, as part of a sting operation perpetuated by Carmone Sabatini(Marlon Brando) in conjunction with the FBI. The komodo dragon survives. Chicken is served. But in the real world, due to callousness and greed, people insist on killing and eating endangered species, some of which are featured in "Oceans", such as the green sea turtle, the bluefin tuna, and the fin whale, while some are not, like the chinook salmon, as if there was no tomorrow. In essence, the director of photography is playing with their food. It's hard to look at a pod of dolphins swimming off the coast of South Africa and not recall the Grand Guignol spectacle in Louie Psihoyos' "The Cove". Parents be forewarned: If your child couldn't handle the truth about Bambi's mother, the law of the ocean may leave them in tears. With no Miley Cyrus in sight, arguably, the film crew is no worse than those Taiji fishermen through their reluctance to intervene on behalf of the scampering, ocean-bound baby turtles, as they fall prey to the swooping gulls. Heavily narrated by Pierce Brosnan, you'll wish that the talking human animal would say something useful like, "Shoo! You there, shoo!"

David S gave it a3:
Poorly edited. Many repetitve scenes and other scenes that are truncated and miss the beauty of the event. Very slow with a tedious voice over. Preachy regarding the environmental point

Maren A. gave it a7:
While the visuals are stunning, the movie felt very disjointed. I felt that there was so much they could have done to make it feel more like a story about the ocean and all the creatures & magical things living within it, but instead, it felt like a sub-par nature show with fantastic images. SO much potential for a really great narrative with a meaningful takeaway message that was not anywhere close to being achieved.

Space Shark gave it a7:
Make sure they check your digital projector before you see it. I saw it last night and everything was pushed to the red. It can make for a poor viewing experience. I hope to see it again with the right colors... Should help get it a higher rating.

Dallas T gave it a6:
I guess I was expecting something new. Felt like it only lasted an hour. Still worth seeing on the big screen...to me anyway.

Nerijus D gave it a10:
Beautiful. A very high-quality film.
