Summary

[Metacritic's 2008 PS3 Game of the Year; Also known as "GTA IV"] What does the American Dream mean today? For Niko Belic, fresh off the boat from Europe. It's the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity. As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them an a living nightmare for those who don't. Playstation Official Magazine UK

GTA IV is richer, deeper and more involving than its predecessors. By the time the story threads start to tie up, the mission trees shake out, you're totally invested in the characters and their world. I'm actually jealous of everyone about to experience it for the first time. The greatest testament to GTA IV's brilliance is that I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since putting the pad down. [May 2008, p.88]

I could go on and on about why Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best games we've ever seen and why even folks who are easily offended should play it, but that would be pointless. The only thing you need to know is that you have to play this game. Period.

Expectations were so high for Grand Theft Auto IV that one of the biggest surprises is that it's managed to meet them. That it's also gone on to confound these is truly a marvel, and the game's Liberty City is nothing less than one of the greatest videogame worlds yet conceived.

The light cast across the spectacuarly detailed facades, the slick road affecting car handling and causing footsteps to kick up splashes, the imposing skyscrapers, the flashing neon, it all changes wiht each passing street, and weather system...That's what you'll take away from GTA IV, along with the multiplayer gift that will keep on giving. [June 2008, p.36]

None of these little flaws take away from Liberty City's breathtaking vistas, incredibly varied scenery, and lived-in look (the PS3 version has the slightest visual edge, plus motion-control support -- but then it's missing Achievements and the eventual downloadable episodes exclusive to the 360 game). The city just feels alive.

It's not flawless, and it probably won't change your life, but GTA IV is an absolutely amazing piece of entertainment. It does things that no other game does, it's immersive in ways that no other game is and it's one of the biggest, wildest, most enjoyable games we've ever played.

Although its got plenty of excellent features, it's ultimately the storytelling that makes it an instant classic, a game unlike any we've played before. As is the case with many great books and movies, you'll want to know what happens to the characters after the game ends, and one can't help hoping that all of their American Dreams comes true.

I now know how film critics felt after screening "The Godfather." It's been days since Grand Theft Auto IV's credits rolled, yet I can’t seem to construct a coherent thought without my mind wandering off into a daydream about the game. I just want to drop everything in my life so I can play it again. Experience it again. Live it again...Grand Theft Auto IV doesn't just raise the bar for the storied franchise; it completely changes the landscape of gaming.

The important thing is that after many years of frustrating missions, driving back home to save repeatedly, struggling with wonky physics, and dealing with farcical storylines, GTA IV has delivered a polished and almost fully renovated experience with a darker and more mature treatment of the subject matter.

In order to describe every little thing that you see in this game would require volumes. There is a staggering level of detail and for every detail we've mentioned so far, there are at least a dozen we've missed. Still, that's the beauty of Grand Theft Auto IV: the details will always be there for you to discover yourself.

Rather than try to out-do the Crackdowns and the Saints Rows of the world with bigger land masses and more missions, Rockstar went the other way, and managed to craft an amazingly impactful story and weave it into an open-world game in an incredibly meaningful way - all without losing the heart and soul of what makes Grand Theft Auto so popular in the first place. The end result is absolutely masterful and absolutely worth your time and money.

[Anonymous] gave it a1:
Hardly enjoyable. does everything a game can do to piss you off. police will come after you EVERY TIME you steal a car, or throw a cup at somebody. it is IMPOSSIBLE to do anything and not get a wanted star. on missions, you can do everything right and still fail because the game will pull off some cheap bullshit that wasn't supposed to happen causing you to fail and get pissed off. these are only a few of the many, many things wrong with this game.

Si gave it an8:
There is no denying GTA4 is an awesome game, well worth playing and contains a lot of gameplay to boot. Visually its great and the entire city is amazing in its detail. The missions are plentyful if not a bit of just the same old thing. Unfortunately what is otherwise an amazing game is let down by some absolutely awful driving controls. Considering this is primarily a game which revolves around driving, its mind blowing how badly the cars drive and the irrotating camera angles used when driving. Its made 100 times worse when driving a motorbike, and attempting to use a helicoptor is beyond belief!! This then bleeds into certain missions which require you to chase people down in cars, or on bike/mo-ped and its beyond frustrating. Those can be a nightmare. Then we have the issue of Missions... if you fail one, you have to restart the ENTIRE thing again from where you begin. Meaning you have to once again find a car, drive to another location (which may be a long distance off) then begin the actual mission. And if you loose your health or your bullet proof vest, you also have to eat and buy a new one, and new ammo BEFORE doing all of that. It would have been better if it respawned you nearer to where the action starts in the mission, and with all the health, ammo and armor you had at that pointt. But instead your health is down, your armor gone and you have to travel there AGAIN. It can cause a lot of shouting and screaming at the TV. But aside from those two big issues... its a great game.

Jason H. gave it a10:
In my opinion one of the best games ever made! Replay value is high, fun level is through the roof and attention to detail is unmatched. I could keep going on and on and on, but what needs to be said is that this is hands down one of the best video games ever crafted. In my opinion of course.

Adam S gave it a0:
A Really really REALLY OVERRATED Why not make yourself pick were you live and play the way you want but you cant you play as Niko Belic a VERY very sad man with a lot of problems making his dream in the USA WHY!?! the Game is made by Rockstar North a UK developer this game is NOT the best game on the PS3/360 its a OK game but its got nothing new! its just the same as all the other GTA's and in most ways not as good tbh! Anything with GTA on it all ways gets 10/10 WHY!!!

Gasper G gave it a7:
The 4th generation of the gta franchise takes you back to Liberty City where you play as Niko Belic whose come to seek the american dream due to his cousins wild emails and a special person the gameplay is youre clasic gta with an improved one on one combat mechanic, a new cower sistem and the lack of vehicles, weapons, mini games, etc. all of witch used to apear in previous gta games luckily it has a good multiplayer that makes the missing content fell less depressive this is a very good game, however you do not get the full game in a copy of gta4 alone, if you want the full game you have to buy a copy and then all the gta dlc avalable that is why i give the disc version a very good 7.

Zerpy Boy gave it a0:
Just another offsetting the 10's. This game does nothing but bow down to the majority of the human race, that being braindead violence hungry war mongers. There is such a game without guns. Those that say RPG's are stale are just naive biased gun crazed so and so's. This game is just as stale, if not more than all the other games out there. Same stories, same missions same simple game play. Nothing new here. I was a fan of the series until the franchise went hyper popular and gained nothing but simple minded followers that wanted guns violence, sex and more guns. Poor form everyone.

Matt S gave it a2:
I actually liked the driving. It's cool how the old junk cars (i.e. Roman's Taxi) can't handle worth a damn and the wheels lock up when you brake traveling at high speeds and the fancier cars (i.e. Coquette, Comet, Infernus) handle like a dream and seem to have ABS. I also liked how varied the buildings are. If you take the time to look at them there aren't very many that are identical, and little things like graffiti add to the atmosphere. But where is the comedy? Where are the properties? With such a massive variety of buildings, why can't I enter the vast majority of them? Where is the sprawling landscape? Where is the national guard? Where is the mission variety (you can either "drive here" or "drive here and kill this guy" or MAYBE "follow this guy then kill him and his friends")? Why are there clothes stores from San Andreas that I'm not allowed to enter? Why do these stores have online shops I can't buy things from? Why don't I get unlimited ammo after I beat the game (I mean, 8 rockets, seriously)? What's with the ending? Did I put up with all that monotony just to lose? Why can't I take over Pegorino's house after he dies, with the two garages and and a house with a helipad right around the corner? Why do I have to spend time taking my 6 friends to one of 7 or 8 generic tasks just so they'll like me enough to help me out (if Rockstar was shooting for realism, saving Roman's ass probably would have been enough reason for him to give you free taxis, same with Little Jacob for the cheap guns)? In San Andreas, there were 3 unique cities with a massive country landscape to fly over/drive through in between. In GTA 3 and Vice City, you were confined to a city but the atmosphere was so light and fun that you felt like you could do anything. GTA 4 restricts you to three identical-feeling islands, covered in high-rises and skyscrapers, and once you get over how fun the ragdoll effect of running over people is, you begin to feel absolutely limited to what you can do. I waited the entire game to get an option of something to do other than the safehouse, a date, or a mission. I never got it. If you've never played a GTA game before this title will absolutely blow your mind, but anyone who has played either third-person game in the franchise will be left feeling ripped off and disappointed due to the complete lack of new features (or even old features for that matter). Long story short: if you have a backwards compatible ps3, get the GTA trilogy. If you don't, get a used ps2 and get the GTA trilogy. Each title in this set offers hundreds more hours of enjoyment than GTA 4.
